For many of us, giving back is a part of everyday life—from small acts of charity, to routinely donating free time towards bettering lives in and around our communities. It’s important work, and being a philanthropist, I truly believe that those who live these values, realize benefits beyond the initial act, including the gift of meeting and connecting with other wonderful individuals.
As a young woman, and undergraduate student working full-time to put myself through DePaul University’s Finance program, I was focused on learning a skill to help find a job. After graduation I had the opportunity to work with entrepreneurs and to assist in the funding to support the creation of new businesses and opportunities. Working with these entrepreneurs, and helping to support their vision, I developed a new personal mission and interest in building businesses. For the past 25+ years entrepreneurial investor, I’ve had the pleasure of working with visionaries to support innovation and new business growth. Recently, I’ve reconnected with my alma mater, and am proud to be lending my experience and support to the University and it’s Coleman Entrepreneurship Center (CEC). Through the programs and support offered at the CEC, DePaul students gain access to specially designed coursework, workshops, and resources to support their interest in starting a new business like start-up consultancy.
This special work spreads the message that opens doors to creating a job instead of feeling that the only option is to look for one. The opportunity lies in achieving success in a personalized way and to feeling the sense of empowerment that this path provides. Starting a new business is a lot of work, and requires perseverance and diligence The experience can be hugely rewarding on a multitude of levels, but at the core, it instills a sense of empowerment and self-confidence that builds character. Those enjoying the rewards of a successful experience, have the opportunity to lift others and share the learning. This is in large part what the CEC and its community of faculty, administration, advisors and mentors are bringing to life at DePaul. It’s rewarding to be a part of this effort and as a strategic leader, working to create tomorrow’s entrepreneurs today.
